George Richter, a young man trying to make a career in the production end of the motion picture industry. As the story begins, George just finished working on a film in Munich and returned home to Vienna. A few hours after his arrival he receives a phone call from his boss. There are labor problems and the crew has to be paid in cash. Would he, George, deliver the money. George knows, in his business one had to do some favors and he leaves.
On his way he has a bad car accident . He wakes up in the hospital.
As soon as he is coherent, he tells the detective investigating the accident about the money and is greatly relieved when it is found. However, there is substantially more, than he was told. As there is no written record, the cop suggest he and George split the difference. George accepts.
The money apparently belongs to a group of tough Ukrainians, who make their displeasure known. George has just started dating Beth, a beautiful, wealthy young woman. The Ukrainians kill a young woman associated with George he becomes desperate. The victim turns out to be someone else and George, though relieved, is angry enough to have thoughts of revenge.
A very lucky incident offers him the apartment of his dreams. A friend of Beth's parents needs to spend a few years in Germany and doesn't want to give up his apartment.He is happy to sublet George. The apartment is located at the end of the Naschmarkt, a legendary Viennese market.
Soon his associate, the policeman is murdered and now he has to fight for his life. He tracks down the young executive who originated his trip to Munich to ask him some questions but ends up killing the man.
Killing the young film executive Seeger George gets hold of Seeger's address book he decides to hunt down the Ukrainians. Unfortunately for him, the money is in American dollars and the Austrian rule for exchanging and are strict. One place he can change dollars for Austrian schillings is the Vienna branch of the American Express. There he encounters an American con artist who will illegally exchange money for him. When he does this the second time the man, Holeman tells him there are some people looking for him. George becomes suspicious and sets up an appointment with Holeman and he is not the least bit surprised, when one of the Ukrainians shows up. George surprises the man and kills him. When he goes to the dead man's apartment he finds a large amount of illegal drugs, guns and cash. He buys a suitcase and, after carefully wiping everything, he puts the drugs in it and deposits the suitcase in a locker at the main railroad terminal and mails the key with a note to they police department. In the note he tells the cops he found the suitcase but doesn't want to get involved.
At a preproduction party he meets the producer and owner of the company, a huge and very impressive Armenian, Kesdekian and the man's film star gorgeous girl friend Sonia. Kesdekian takes to George and invites him to his mansion for dinner. Kesdekian is about to embark on a trip to Zurich to attend a high priced art auction and George's impressive knowledge of modern art gives him the idea to take George with them and assist him in the selection and bidding. George accepts. He spends a few pleasant days in Zurich is sorely tempted to have an affair with Sonia.
Just when it seems nothing can go wrong George is kidnapped. and ends up tied securely to a chair in a warehouse in Vienna's industrial district. There he meets the kingpin of the group, Kessler, a ruthless German businessman gives him the choice of telling him the location of the money or death Kessler, will torture it out of him. George tells Kessler of the hiding place in his old apartment and Kessler leaves. George knows, he has maybe two hours and manages to escape. From then on it is a race between George tracking down Kessler and vice versa.
